Previous view
We remain constructive on semiconductors as core AI infrastructure, while classifying the setup as strong fundamentals, crowded positioning and a price discounting part of the future. The strategy shifted from chasing to staged buying.
New evidence
By late August, SOXX still showed a strong year-to-date return and a wide range. Crowding fell but semiconductors remained the most crowded trade. NVIDIA validated demand while focusing attention on margins, free cash flow, financing and supply constraints.
Judgment update
We did not turn bearish on the theme; we raised the entry threshold. New capital should require intact fundamentals, valuation digestion, stabilizing flows and a margin of safety.
Portfolio implication
Do not buy merely to be invested. When a core position exists, cash is also a position: observe small, add on better odds, and reach target weight only when fundamentals and flows re-align.
What we watch next
- Hyperscaler CapEx revisions
- Conversion of orders and backlog into revenue and free cash flow
- AI financing cost, credit spreads and payment quality
- SOXX/SMH flows and relative strength versus QQQ
- Valuation digestion through earnings growth or price reset
What would invalidate the view?
A synchronized deterioration in CapEx, orders, backlog and credit would shift the call from de-crowding to a weakening industry cycle. Stable fundamentals, lower valuation and returning flows would improve forward odds.
